TULI WILDERNESS TRAILS & ACCOMMODATION

Tuli Hills Pan

LOCATION

We are situated in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve on the Great Limpopo River, in Botswana, just across the border from South Africa.

ABOUT NORTHERN TULI GAME RESERVE

The Northern Tuli Game Reserve boasts the world’s largest elephant population on privately owned land and elephant viewing is awesome with some unparalleled sightings and provides fantastic photographic opportunities.

The Tuli area is rich in archaeological heritage and San rock art sites have been discovered alongside numerous archaeological sites dating back to the Stone Age. Scattered artifacts are still being discovered all over the area.

DISTANCE

Approximately 6 hours from Gauteng (Johannesburg and Pretoria), 3 hours from Louis Trichardt, 3 hours from Polokwane & 1½ hours from Mussina. Platjan & Pontdrif are the two closest border posts. It would be wise to enquire which of the two borders to use, should the Limpopo be flowing. A 4x4 vehicle is not necessary to reach our reception. From there we will drive your party to the camp in our open 4x4 safari vehicle fitted with a trailer for your luggage.

PROFESSIONALLY GUIDED WILDERNESS TRAILS

We offer a 4-night wilderness trail, professionally guided and hosted by Craig Beaton (ex Kruger Park Wilderness Trails Ranger). It takes place over a period of four nights and has three full days of walking. You will be accompanied by 2 experienced, professional rangers. This is a fully catered package (brunch and bush dinners) for up to eight trailists. The trails run on the same concept as South African National Parks and Kwa-Zulu Natal Parks wilderness trails.

The trail starts at our luxury tented Musth Camp. We spend the first night here and the following morning we walk to the rustic Rutt Camp, our home for the next two nights. We walk out from this camp each day. The last night is spent back at Musth Camp. Although the emphasis is on walking and wilderness, we sometimes use a vehicle to get to the more remote good walking areas.

A typical day is made up of two sessions: after a dawn wake-up and a cup of coffee or tea and rusks we head off for a morning walk, which lasts between four and five hours. We take regular breaks and rest halfway through the morning walk at a pleasant spot to enjoy basic snacks, fruit juice and water. We return to camp about two hours later, have a shower and then a hearty brunch followed by a siesta. In the afternoon we go for another walk and return to camp just after sunset. The evening meal is served about an hour later around the camp fire.

We supply lightweight backpacks and water bottles for use on the trail. The trail covers between 8 and 12km per day, depending on the level of fitness of trailists. Children 12 years old and younger cannot participate on these trails.

Some essentials to bring with on the trails:

Drinks, ice, hat, torch (essential), sunscreen, insect repellent, strong comfortable walking shoes, neutrally-coloured clothes, binoculars (optional) and camera (optional).

Please note: we are able to accommodate shorter and longer duration trails, subject to camp availability. Please contact us if you wish to discuss options, and for more information on the guided wilderness trails.

ACCOMMODATION

We have three camps:
Musth luxury tented camp
Mohave bush camp
Rutt rustic tented camp

MUSTH LUXURY TENTED CAMP

Musth Luxury Tented Camp is located along the shady floodplain of the Limpopo River (about 600 meters from the river), under the many tall riverine trees, including Mashatu and Apple-leaf trees. You can view game (including elephants, leopard, bushbuck, bush pigs, warthogs and African wild cats) from the camp, as they regularly visit the waterhole just below the camp. Birders will be pleasantly rewarded with sightings of the many species occurring in this camp’s riverine habitat.

Musth camp consists of five luxury safari style tents with en suite bathrooms and flush toilets. There are two beds in each tent (bed linen and towels are provided), thus the camp can accommodate up to ten guests. Each tent has electric and hurricane lamps (lanterns) and a fan.

There are two fully equipped kitchens, (one situated on each side of the camp), enabling the camp to operate as two separate fully functional camps. Both kitchens are equipped with cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, toaster, electric kettle, fridge, deep-freeze, gas stove and microwave. Each kitchen also has a communal area that has its own lapa / dining area with braai facilities.

This unfenced camp has electric lights and hurricane lamps (lanterns). Hot water is heated by a "donkey boiler" system. The camp is serviced daily by the full time camp attendant.

Please Note! Whilst bookings are subject to a minimum of four people, we are, at certain times, able to accommodate those booking requests for only 2 guests, at Musth camp. Note that this is strictly subject availability and can only be confirmed ten days prior to arrival. Please discuss this option with us.

MOHAVE BUSH CAMP

Mohave Bush Camp is situated deep in the Mopane veld along the seasonal Mohave River, set amongst tall Apple-leaf and Tamboti trees. Duikers, civets, genets and porcupines are regular visitors through this camp. Birders will enjoy a mixture of bushveld and small riverine species sightings in and around the camp

This unfenced bush camp is self-catering and consists of four units constructed of Mopane poles and thatch on a concrete floor. There are two beds per unit and two units are large enough to accommodate four beds in each, thus accommodating 12 guests comfortably in this camp.

This works well for families with young children who would prefer not to sleep alone. The huts have single beds, hurricane lamps and candles. All bed linen and towels are provided. Ablutions are open under the stars with hot and cold showers and flush toilets.

The large rustic thatched kitchen, bar and dinning area is open style surrounding an enormous Apple-leaf tree. The kitchen is fully equipped with a four-plate gas stove/ oven, gas fridge, cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery. The braai facilities are situated under the tall riverine trees. The camp is serviced daily by the full time camp attendant.

Rutt Rustic Tented Camp is primarily used to accommodate trailists participating on our professionally guided trails, but can be booked on a self-catering basis between trails. This camp provides the most authentic wilderness experience on the Tuli Wilderness Trails concession

This fly-camp is set deep in the wildest of places and moves from season to season, following the movement of game, available water and shade. Being unfenced, it is not uncommon for large animals to wander through the camp, affording excitement, adventure of being close to these free-roaming animals (like elephants and lions).

Rutt camp consists of four "dome" style tents with fly sheets for shade, with two beds in each tent, thus the camp sleeps ten guests.

The tents each have hurricane lamps and candles. Basic rustic ablutions give this camp its adventurous charm.

The kitchen is under a spacious army style tent and has cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery.

The dining area is also under tent-style cover and there is a fire / braai area under the stars where guests can relax and take in the spirit of the bush.
