ABOUT LAMBERT'S BAY
The town was named after Sir Robert Lambert, an admiral in the British Navy at Cape Town, who surveyed this part of the coast between 1826 and 1840.
During the Anglo-Boer war the British sent a reconnaissance boat, the “Sybille”, to patrol the West Coast. Lambert’s Bay was identified as an excellent place to unload weapons and the boat was frequently seen in the area. One night in January 1901, a strong north wind drove the ship towards the rocks and the ship ran aground. The propeller stands in the grounds of the Sandveld Museum in town, where memorabilia are to be found. The wreck of the “Sybille” is on a nearby farm called “Steenbokfontein” and can be seen at low tide.
A crayfish factory was erected in 1918. Today only fish meal is processed in the factory and a potato chipping factory occupies part of the premises. These two concerns are the main employers in the town.
WHAT TO SEE & DO IN LAMBERT'S BAY
Wild Flower time
- Lambert’s Bay is renowned for its wild flowers. In spring the area is turned into a mass of colour by gazanias, mesembs, wild rosemary, restios the grey conebush and crassula shrubs.
- The flowers extend down to the beach where visitors can go for long walks
in the surrounding veld.
- There are a number of eco-tour options, where amateur botanists will take you for guided drives on their farms (rooibos tea farm, wheat, barley).
- The surrounding area boasts an enormous diversity of floral wealth.
- At Verlorenvlei the rare Sandveld lily is found.
Birds and Birding
- Bird Island is the breeding ground of thousands of Cape gannets, cormorants, Jackass or African penguins and other sea birds.
- The island can be reached along a breakwater. The best time to visit
is early in the morning or at sunset.
- Cape Shoveller, Great White Pelican, Lesser and Greater Flamingo, Gulls, Ducks, Wading birds, Shorebirds and Seabirds amongst others abound in the Lamberts Bay area
- Birders can also take a trip to Verlorenvlei where an estimated 500 Bird species have been recorded.
- Birds that occur here include Herons, Spoonbills, Plovers, Coots, Pelicans,
Kingfishers, Flamingos, Geese, Ducks, Egrets, Sandgrouse, Quails, Francolins
and Terns.
- Another trip that Birders could take is to Rocherpan where 183 species have been recorded.
- Here you could find the African Black Oystercatcher, Falmingos, Pelicans
and about 70 species of water birds, wading birds, ducks and shorebirds
amongst others.
Whales and Dolphins
- Lambert’s Bay is the best place to take a boat trip to encounter the small Heaviside’s Dolphins (Cephalorhynchus heavisidii). It is a speciality species and the only cetacean species to be found in Southern Africa, endemic specifically to the South African West coast.
- The area is also one of a few places on the South African coastline where you could view Dusky Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus).
