LOCATIONRooipoort Gasteplaas (Guest Farm) offers accommodation in the Karoo, halfway between Gauteng and Cape Town. We are situated 16km from Philipstown in the Northern Cape Province. ACCOMMODATIONThere are 4 double rooms, 3 bathrooms and a stone cottage with two rooms, bathroom, kitchenette and a fireplace. All accommodation provides comfort and privacy. Enjoy excellent farm cooking and traditional meals. A herb garden, vegetable garden and orchards, provide fresh produce for the kitchen in season. Lamb and venison are natural choices for the menu. The large dining room table where meals are served provides for an old-worldly and romantic feeling. RATES
For Enquiries & Reservations click here ABOUT ROOIPOORT GASTEPLAASRooipoort is a peaceful farm in the middle of the Karoo and is an ideal stopover for travellers between Gauteng and Cape Town. Rooipoort is a large sheep farm and its graceful farmstead amid a tree-filled garden, reflects typical Karoo architecture with wooden floors and ceilings. The farmstead is more than a hundred years old and the furniture inside are a collection of Colonial, Victorian as well as Africana. There is a large art collection on display inside the house as well as in the garden. Your hosts, Andries and Kay, are the seventh generation on the farm. Rooipoort is the third oldest farm in the district and is a crown farm (never bought or sold). HIKING TRAILSThere are hiking trails on the farm and fascinating, centuries old rock engravings as well as stone-age implements can be seen. WILDLIFEGame species on the farm include Springbok, Blesbok, Aardvark, Bat-eared Fox, Cape Fox, Black-backed Jackal, Eland, Blue Wildebeest, Gemsbok (Oryx), Rhebuck, Steenbok and Rock hyrax (Dassies). BIRDLIFEMore than 200 bird species have been recorded in the area and on the farm a variety of bird species can be seen, including Eagles like the Verreauxe's Eagle, Falcons, Korhaan and Larks. Lamb, venison, biltong, droëwors (dried sausage), almonds, pickled fruit - all depending in season or not. Place your order when you do the booking! KAY FOURIE SCULPTINGKay Fourie works from her studio on the farm Rooipoort, near Philipstown in the Karoo. For the past 21 years Kay has been making sculptures here in the desert and she says: “It taught me to work with what I have (building cement from the local co-op and 'scrap' like tin, bottles etc.) I also use papier-mâché, clay, wood and textiles.” Her work includes various commissions - portrait and non-portraiture.
