"Coast of Diamonds - wild and windswept, unspoilt and evocative"

LOCATION

Namaqualand Diamond Coast has a variety of accommodation facilities and is part of the De Beers Diamond Route in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Venture in your 4 x 4 to the spectacular Coast of Diamonds and visit places like Kleinzee, Koingnaas and Noup along this wild and pristine coastline.

ABOUT NAMQUALAND DIAMOND COAST

On the wild and windswept West Coast - 60km south of Port Nolloth - is Kleinzee. Aptly named the Diamond Coast, this beautiful stretch of Namaqualand coastline is usually carpeted in wild flowers from August to early September and often shrouded in mist in winter. It's a moody place and yet calm reigns and stillness pervades.

These pristine shores have remained virtually unknown to the public at large as it is within the restricted and previously forbidden diamond mining areas.

Diamonds aren't the only treasures found in this area though, this stretch of coastline has many unique offerings - and is unspoilt and evocative.

It is also home to about 115 bird species and many indigenous plants, animals and insects.

The coastline, with its flowing dunes and mysterious shipwrecks, has been opened to the fortunate few who can participate in our organised guided tours. And any visitor to the West Coast or Richtersveld will find that a tour of The Diamond Coast will vastly enhance the experience of this unique mix of coastal plain and semi arid inland.-

WILDLIFE, NATURE & THE COASTLINE

There is a habitat and a creature to charm every visitor.

The Diamond Coast is inhabited by 27 different species of mammals. This includes the brown hyena or "strandwolf", our largest carnivore, and the shy bat-eared fox, the termite controller.

Amongst other antelope there are springbok and gemsbok, which can be seen in our 30 000 hectare game park.

The world-renowned resident seal colony contains more than 350 000 animals on the admiralty strip and is protected by the adjacent mining area

The Diamond Coast is home to many insect species, the "bleekpoot skerpioen" is one of them. From scorpions and spiders to beetles and other bugs, the variety will keep entomologists, amateur and professional, entertained for many hours.

The cold blooded inhabitants include the Namaqua and dwarf chameleon; ten lizard species, including the striped sand lizard and giant ground gecko; eight snake species, such as the egg eater; a number of tortoise species, including the speckled tortoise.

The Diamond Coast is home to five species of amphibians or frogs. Amongst these are the rare and endemic species: Berviceps macrops, better known by its common name the rain frog or "rëenpadda". The rain frog appears to mate only after rains. When the veld starts drying out, it buries itself deep into the soil and slumbers until the next rains arrive.

Each group of vegetation has adapted its own set of survival tactics although much of the flora is stunted due to summer southerly gales. The area has a very rich biodiversity of miniature succulents, stem succulents, low leaf succulents and bulbs. Endemic species such as the strandvygie, vaalvygie and the knoppiesblaar viooltjie can also be found.

BIRDLIFE

More than 115 bird species have been recorded in the area and many indigenous plants, animals and insects. Typical bird species to be found would be Kori and Ludwig's Bustard and Southern Black Korhaan, Pale Chanting Goshawk, Jackal Buzzard, Karoo Scrub Robin, Karoo Thrush, Lesser Double-collared and Malachite Sunbird and Orange River White-eye. A pleasantly familiar site along this coastline is the near-threatened African Black Oystercatcher. Birding routes here cover the coastline, an estuary and various nature reserves.

NATURAL HISTORY OF THE DIAMOND COAST

The Namaqualand Coast has a rich archaeological heritage. Large numbers of sites are found in a good state of preservation mainly due to the restricted public access to the coast. The Stone Age tradition in South Africa is more than 2 million years old and artefacts characteristic of the Late Stone Age appeared roughly 40 000 years ago.
There are some Early Stone Age sites close to Kleinzee. Middle Stone Age sites are very scarce but Late Stone Age sites along the coast are abundant.

There are also a few colonial sites along the South African coast related to shipwrecks and identified by glass, porcelain and earthenware, ceramic pipes, iron objects and graves in the Christian burial tradition with crude headstones.
