MONTUSI MOUNTAIN LODGE

Montusi Mountain Lodge ©
“Tranquility in one of the most beautiful settings in Southern Africa”

LOCATION

Montusi Mountain Lodge is situated in the Kwazulu-Natal Drakensberg, near Bergville, halfway between Johannesburg and Durban.

TYPE OF VENUE

Montusi Mountain Lodge is the only upmarket destination in the area with a full and uninterrupted view of the Drakensberg's most famous part, the Amphitheatre escarpment. Our guests enjoy this spectacular scenery in the comfort of their private individual garden suites.

ABOUT MONTUSI MOUNTAIN LODGE

In the northern Drakensberg Mountains, a World Heritage Site, Montusi Mountain Lodge is a spacious luxury resort in an idyllic setting with panoramic views of the magnificent Amphitheatre.

Montusi Mountain Lodge offers genuine hospitality in the tranquility of one of the most beautiful settings in Southern Africa. Space, comfort and peace are what you will find when you treat yourself to the natural splendour and peaceful, romantic ambiance of this Drakensberg haven.

Doing nothing is probably the most favourite past time at Montusi. No pressure, no wake up calls (in fact no telephone in the room), hot water all day long. Montusi is the best place to simply wind down and relax. Just enjoy our little bit of paradise and recharge the batteries.

The Lodge

Montusi consists of a large and beautifully thatched main building (with reception, restaurant, terrace, bar, lounge and meeting room) and 14 spacious, tastefully decorated, individual garden suites which are among the most luxurious in the Drakensberg.

Lounge and Bar

Our comfortable lounge is a focal point for local and international guests. We meet for chats, a game of scrabble, trivial pursuit or jenga or the occasional event e.g. slide shows, talks, etc. The "Ememeli" Bar has a pool table and darts area upstairs as well as plenty of room downstairs for drinks and animated discussions.

Swimming Pool

Our fenced swimming pool looks out at the escarpment. The surrounding rocks have provided inspiration for this unusual and beautifully crafted pool which makes it the guest's favourite place in summer. Here, we have built a thatched pavilion, great for braais or functions, and more shade is provided by old gum trees, and thatched umbrellas.

Cuisine

Our intimate restaurant (with under-floor heating and log fireplace) is renowned for sumptuous local cuisine with innovative menus. Breakfast and dinner are included for lodge guests. Light lunches and teas can be ordered separately.

Awarded a Chef’s Hat in Portfolio Collection, our cuisine has been the subject of much praise.

FAUNA & FLORA

With such climatic and geological conditions it is no wonder that our fauna, and especially flora, are unique. Apart from the very elusive leopard, we do not have the Big Five, but we do have fantastic antelope, birdlife (especially birds of prey), smaller mammals and reptiles. The largest antelope is the eland, at 700 kg.

Smaller antelope, especially Reedbuck, Bushbuck, Blesbuck and Duikers, are spotted frequently. Lynx, Serval, African Wildcat, Black-backed Jackals, Cape fox, Large-spotted Genets and Otters occur also. Some of our snakes are dangerous (Puffadders and Rinkhals) but accidents are very rare and can be avoided altogether when keeping to a few basic rules. Baboons and Rock Dassies (Hyraxes) can be seen on the cliffs. A multitude of small rodents provide prey for the soaring eagles and vultures. Our birdlife is prolific with species count at over 200. Commonly seen are kingfishers, storks (in winter), eagles and buzzards, Secretary birds, owls, doves, nightjars, swifts, tits, shrikes, weavers, etc.

High up on the Berg you will find unique, hardy and very fragile mountain flora similar to the flora in other high altitude places, such as the European Alps. Hence the botanical description Alpine (on the Escarpment) and Sub-Alpine (from the sandcliffs to the Escarpment) vegetation. On the slopes of the Little Berg vegetation is called Montane (i.e.from the sandstone cliffs downwards). The most prolific vegetation is actually grass (many different types) and it is here where the really unique plants and trees grow in secluded valleys, especially proteas, cycads, tree ferns, cabbage trees and occasional giants such as Yellow Woods. Common flowers include lilies, lion's tail, agapanthus, red hot poker, watsonia, helicrysum, erica, etc.
