WILDLIFE & NATURE
Samango Monkeys
Samango monkeys are rare (CITES Appendix II) because they are confined
to the evergreen Afromontane forests of Southern Africa, which covers
less than 1% of the land area of the sub-region. Tourists and nature lovers rarely see the Samango. Only in a few unique
places does one have the rare opportunity to come face to face with
these graceful little apes. One such place is the Magoebaskloof Hotel
in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.
Because the hotel management is committed to sustainable and environmentally
friendly management practices, they have lived in harmony with these
monkeys for many years now.
More
Bushbuck and Duiker are some of the other larger mammals
that occur in the area and sometimes at night or early morning, the
cough of a Leopard can be heard coming from within the dense forest. Birds & Birding
The Magoebaskloof Hotel is particularly well situated
as a premier birding destination. Nestled on the edge of one of the
largest consolidated expanses of Afromontane Forest (further information
in this site) in the sub region, the hotel offers forest birding
of the very highest quality. Some of the more interesting species that can be seen in this area
include:
Bat Hawk, African Goshawk, Gymnogene, Redchested Flufftail,
Cape Parrot, Wood Owl, Narina Trogon, Longtailed Wagtail,
Longcrested Eagle, Crowned Eagle, Martial Eagle and
Forest Buzzard.
Afromontane forest
Southern Africa is poorly endowed with true forests.
The key environmental factors that limit the spread of these beautiful
forests are mainly rainfall and human encroachment.
Except for the coastal forests at Knysna, the Afromontane
forest of the Magoebaskloof area rank as one of the
most extensive in South Africa and also the most beautiful.
For any visitor, either going to, or coming from the
Kruger National Park, a stop over at the Magoebaskloof
Hotel is considered a "must". The Afromontane
forest at this hotel is of the most beautifully preserved,
and the true nature of these unique natural assets can
be explored directly outside the hotel.
Of the most prominent tree species
found in the forests are Real Yellowwood (Podocarpus
latifolius), Outeniqua Yellowwood (Podocarpus
falcatus), Red Currant (Rhus chirendensis),
Cape Chestnut (Calodendrum capense), Milkwood
(Ilex mitis), Tree Fuchsia (Halleria lucida),
Wild Peach (Kigelaria africana), Forest Elder
(Nuxia floribunda) and Stinkwood (Xymalos
monospora).
There are a variety of shrubs and climbers like:
Common Spikethorn (Maytenus heterophylla), Cat-thorn (Scutia
myrtina)
and
Numnum (Carissa
bispinosa).
In the understory of the forests, ferns and herbs include
amongst others Basketgrass (Oplismenus hirtellus), Bushmangrass
(Stipa
dregeana var. elongata) and Pig's Ears (Centella asiatica).
