THE OLIFANTS RIVER BACK-PACK TRAIL:
The Olifants River Back-Pack Trail differs from the other trails (mentioned above), in the sense that it is a total wilderness experience, where participants will hike from a certain point towards their destination, which they will reach after 4 days. In the main the trail follows the course of the Olifants River. There are no overnight accommodation facilities and participants will sleep in the bush every night at a different location, as they advance along the trail. The trail does not follow a set route and the camping sites are selected anew by the Trails Ranger in charge of the group. In line with the conservation aspects and the ecological sensitivity of the area through which the trail is conducted, this trail operates on the basis of "everything you bring in, you must take out with you", to try and keep it as untouched as possible by humans.

This unique wilderness experience starts at Olifants Camp, from where you will be taken by vehicle to your starting point. From there on everything needed for the trail (tents, sleeping bags, etc.), must be carried by participants themselves. At the end of the trail, participants will be picked up again and driven back to Olifants Camp.

The duration is 3 nights and 4 days. A maximum of 8 persons are allowed on the trail.

MPHONGOLO BACK-PACK TRAIL:
From 1 April 2010

Mphongolo Back Pack Trail is found between Shingwedzi and Mphongolo Rivers and the duration of the trail is three nights, four days. It will depart from Shingwedzi Camp every Wednesday and Sunday at 14:00. However, on account of rainy conditions in summer, the trail will only be open between 1 February and 30 November of every year. There are no overnight huts on this trail and back-packers must provide for all their needs for the duration of the trail i.e. sleeping bags, tents and food. The trail takes a maximum of eight back-packers and a minimum of four at the time and it will be guided by two experienced Trails Rangers.

These wilderness trails are very popular and reservations must be done a year in advance to ensure availability.
