WILDLIFE & NATURE
The majestic Cederberg area is unique in that it comprises an untouched Karoo-like wilderness where guests will find beautiful wild flowers that are scarcely seen in other parts of the country.
From mid-August to mid-November the area turns into a botanist's paradise with wild flowers blooming in every direction.
Plants are described as drier mountain Fynbos and a variety of shrubs dominate the area, including Southern Cone Marigold, Klaaslouwbos, Koringbos, Renosterbos, Sneeubos, Wolwedoring, Taaibos and Skilpadbessie. Some Protea species, typical to the Cape, can be found in higher parts.
Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve is home to many different wild animals. The Burchell's Zebra and Antelope species including Eland, Gemsbuck, White-Tailed Gnu, Blue Wildebeest, Bontebok, Springbok, Grey Rhebok, Duiker, Klipspringer and Steenbuck are most common.
Smaller animals such as the Dassie, Yellow Mongoose, Rock Rabbit, Cape Hare and Striped Polecat inhabit the Reserve. The larger animal residents, which generally cause the most excitement amongst our guests, include Aardwolf, Lynx, Antbear (Aardvark), Black-backed Jackal, Caracal and Cape Porcupine. The only large predator found in these parts is the Leopard. These beautiful and illusive creatures generally prefer the safety and quiet of the canyon in the west and although real-time sightings are rare, Kagga Kamma is fortunate to enjoy the privilege of regular sightings via a motion sensor cameras and passionate and qualified guides who keep tabs on them via spoor and kill tracking.
Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve is home to many bird species. On the open plains large birds like Ostrich, Secretary bird and Kori Bustard can be seen and closer to the Lodge Cape Robin, Cape Bulbul, Cape Sparrow and House Sparrow can be found. During winter and spring, Egyptian Geese, Red Billed Teal, Black Duck and South African Shelduck are seen near open water. Among the most typical sounds of the veld at Kagga Kamma are those produced by the noisy Black Bustard and the Namaqua Sand Grouse, with its typical call of 'kelkiewyn', an apt reminder that the time for a sundowner approaches.
Cultural Heritage
One of Kagga Kamma’s most unique attractions is the Bushmen rock art that is found in the area. This region was home to the Bushmen for centuries. The red-brown weathered sandstone formations seen here are typical to the Cederberg. Some sites depict everyday events while others are representations of spiritual beliefs. The art tells a story that is thousands of years old, about the Bushmen who painted, danced and lived in harmony with their surrounds. Some of these paintings date back approximately 6000 years. Some of the art also depicts ships and ox wagons.
The rock art shows that some animals that were previously present in the area have become extinct. Some of the art is also related to the Bushmen's religious beliefs and practises and depicts trance and healing dances. During these dances women would rhythmically sing and clap their hands while men and shamans danced themselves into a trance-like state. It was believed that during a trance state the men would be able to break through to the world of spirits, the main source of sickness, and directly communicate with these spirits to be able to become more effective healers.
