Marataba Trails Lodge, sister lodge of Marataba Safari Lodge is one of the most spectacular safari lodges and guests are treated to various incomparable walking safaris in a Big Five wilderness area.

The lodge is located in the Waterberg region and falls within the spectacular Marakele National Park. It is about 4 hours by road from Johannesburg.

This eco-friendly lodge runs off solar power, and activities are purely focused on walking safaris.

Accommodation at Marataba Trails Lodge consist of 5 luxurious suites and accommodates 8 guests.

Each of the 5 luxurious suites has king sized or twin beds, a private shaded viewing deck, a fireplace, en-suite bathroom with rain dance shower with a view, free standing vanity and a viewing deck.

Marataba Walking Trails

A variety of trails are available, including Riverine, Gorge, Mountain and Interest Trails and differs

in respect of degree of difficulty and fitness required. Trails range from trekking over the top of the Kransberg range, to traversing through gorges. Morning and afternoon trails depart from the camp each day, with the option of enjoying a full-day hike and picnic in winter. All trails are based on either two or three night departures.

Regardless of the route, the one thing that remains consistent is the possibility of encountering wildlife and birdlife, regardless of the route.

Evenings are spent around the fire in the boma, learning about African bush cooking techniques, local customs and legends.

Riverine Trails

These trails follow the natural river course and are great for encountering general game. The trails also meander past some of the bigger waterholes which attract a number of animal species.

Gorge Trails

The trails descend into the gorges of the Waterberg Mountains and guests on the trails will traverse into unchartered areas of the reserve only accessible by foot. There may even be an opportunity to have a swim in one of the fresh water pools!

Mountain Trails

The vistas from these trails are beautiful. A few of the longer trails move up and over some of the mountains in the reserve into neighbouring valleys.

Interest Trails

These trails will offer walkers the opportunity to see cave paintings, Iron Age ruins and other relics of The Stone Age.

Marataba Trails Lodge is all about healthy living, and guests are treated to an interactive culinary experience with Marataba’s chef who specializes in fresh, organic and delicious meals – many of

which are prepared over an open fire.

CHILDREN

Marataba Trails Lodge welcomes children from 16 years of age.

WILDLIFE, BIRDLIFE & NATURE

Marakele National Park is home to a wide range of wildlife including the sought after Big 5 mammals, as well as prolific birdlife. The Kransberg Mountain range is a majestic backdrop in an area that provides spectacular African scenery.

Birdlife is abundant and includes the largest colony of endangered Cape Vultures in the world, with more than 800 breeding pairs that have settled here.

The Marakele Reserve is unique in respect of topography, flora and fauna. Some of the unique plant species that could be seen are cycads of more than 5 metres, tree ferns and rare finds of cedar and yellowwood trees.

The Marakele Reserve presents a rich biodiversity and features ancient mountains, thousands-year-old rock art and a site of critical archaeological and paleontological importance.

LOCATION & ACCESS

Marataba Trails Lodge is located within the Marakele National Park, near Thabazimbi in Limpopo Province and a mere 4 hour’s drive from Johannesburg.

Guests also have the option of a road transfer in an air conditioned vehicle between Johannesburg and Marataba.

A private airstrip is available to guests staying at Marataba for private charter flights. Transfers between the airstrip and Marataba Safari Lodge are approximately 25 minutes.
